Emergency vehicle accident

While in most respects emergency vehicle accidents are the same as other motor vehicle accidents, in some respects they are unique. Police cars, ambulances and fire engines must obey most traffic laws. However, while on an emergency call they are permitted to proceed through a stop light or stop sign after making sure the way is clear. They can also exceed the speed limit as long as their actions do not endanger the public. Therefore, our analysis takes into account a number of other considerations specific to emergency vehicles.

Areas we typically address for an emergency vehicle accident:

  • Were emergency flashers and siren activated
  • Was the emergency vehicle visible to other traffic before it proceeded through the intersection
  • Did other drivers keep a proper lookout and yield to the emergency vehicle
  • Whether the driver followed guidelines and procedures applicable to the specific situation
  • Did the driver exceeded the safe speed for the vehicle and roadway
